Grant was the son of an Ohio tanner.He attended West Point Military Academy.He fought under Zachary Taylor after that for several years.After a few years of that Grant had become a brigade general on Sept. 1861.Grant captured Fort Henry and attacked Fort Donnellson.After this president Lincoln promoted Grant to General.Later when Grant didn’t do so well at Shiloh in April, people started to demand that he be replaced, but Lincoln would not replace one of his top generals He was later promoted to general-in-chief.With the combined attack of General Sherman and General Grant they defeated the army at Northern Virginia.Lee surrendered on ARIL 9, 1865 AT Appomattox Court House.
